Book Review # 12: Harvard Business Review 10 must reads on Changes

Harvard Business Review 10 Must Read on Change
I can’t remember buying this book no matter how hard I try. Out of nowhere, it’s kind of appear in my library. Anyway, this book sold at Kinokuniya for THB 898. It’s about 200 pages and full with useful stuff.
It’s basically a what the book claimed to be, it’s a package of articles on “Change” that considered best articles from publisher’s opinions.
The articles were written by the following authors
John P Kotter
David A Garvin and Michael A Roberto
Paul Hemp and Thomas A Steward
Dabra E Meyerson
W Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne
Ronald A Heifetz and Marty Linsky
Robert Kekan and Lisa Laskow Lahey
Michael Beer and Nitin Nohria
Harodl L Sirkin, Perry Keenan and Alan Jackson
Michael Beer, Russell A Eisenstat and Bert Spector
Each article is about 20 pages give or take, the good thing is that it’s self contain. Thus, by reading each of the article, you will get a whole story in less than 30 minutes.
However, it’s still an academic articles. It totally remind me of reading organizational behavior text book while I studied my MBA. Boring Boring Boring....
Also, since they organized in un-related chapter although it’s on the same topic but writing style is totally different from article to article. Therefore, it’s lack on continuity.
The essences of the book is to emphasize on why and how it is so important to change your organization (and I always thought that the same principle can be used to change our own behavior too). Step by step, this book will guide you on how to implement the change strategy and what are the issues that need to addresses. Also, what are the general mistakes people do when trying to implement change strategy in their organization. It also contains case studies and example what have been done right or wrong.
The book is “complete” in the sense that if someone go through all the guidelines, it’s pretty much ensure that that people will be successful at implementing the change strategy in their organization. Beware though, things are easier said than done as usual.
To sum it up, it a very good reference book when you want to do a presentation to impress your boss or client. It’s contains models, theories and fancy charts that can be used to convince people in the meeting room.
It’s a boring book that you should have on your book shelf and from time to time, you might find it useful.
Like Hemingway said, not all the good books are fun. Judging from that principle, I give this book 8/10.

Monocle : Best Magazine In the World (so far)
Like most people,  I don’t have a chance to travel the world as much as I wanted too.
Juggling to balance work, family and personal life, sometime we lost touch to the world without even knowing it.
That, my friend, can sometimes be dangerous in this creative economy world. That is, of course, if you considered  falling behind lethal.
To keep up with the world in this hectic life of Bangkokian, I read Monocle.
Monocle to me is not just a magazine, it’s more like a journal of creative minds. It walked me to the current affairs of the planet in a way other magazines can’t. Well, to be more precise, Monocle gives you  news, trends and updates in a stylish way.
This success comes from a vision of Tyler Brûlé, founder and editor in chief of Monocle magazine. He also a founder of Wallpaper Magazine which is one of my favorite magazine as well. (however, even I subscribed to both magazines, I do like Monocle much better than Wallpaper)
Even with a lot of nice picture in this magazine, I still think that the amount of text in it can easily equal to a thick novel.
Every time I read this magazine I realized two things. First, I  amaze to see many extraordinary creativities/initiatives from around the globe from it’s a Japanese way of designing a modern temple to how Copenhagen kick up culinary standard another notch. Second, unlike other magazines, Monocle only have one edition : the global edition thus it reminds me of how much Thailand still left behind and what a tragic on the way we cultivated on our recourses and culture. I can feel that other Thai people who read this magazine probably have a similar feeling to me. Frankly, it reminds me that in the global scale we nearly existed. It’s time for Thai people to start changing their country not just for the sake of themselves but for the sake of generations to come.
The content of the magazine also encourage me to imagine more. In some way I have the same feelings as when I read cartoon during my childhood. It’s not only entertaining but also igniting the creative process.
If you only have time to read one magazine a month, read this. You won’t regret it. (on another issue, Monocle only published 10 magazines a year)
This is not a book thus I’m not gonna rate it but on a category of magazine, it’s definitely a ten.
Cheers

Live & Learn

Live & Learn
8/10

Book Review # 9: Disrupt - A manual to your mind

Disrupt
“Intuition is nothing but the outcome of earlier intellectual experience” - Albert Einstein
Well well well, it’s good to be back.I haven’t been doing the book review for over a month.
As we all know, Thailand faced one of the worst flood in our nation’s history. While the real cause of the flood is debatable, it’s about time we get our lives back together and move on.
During the peak period I absorbed the flooding news like sponge. Therefore, i was too stress to read, too stress to do something creative. Basically, I was kind of dried out. I managed to read only one book during that period (No, it’s not the book i’m going to review today). It’s a Japanese thriller which was actually quite good.
Anyway, back to our book. I bought this book after I attended the TCDC annual symposium which one of the key speakers that day was Luke Williams. The overall event itself was astonishing but Mr William speech has given me some insights that I would like to study more. Thus, I ordered 5 copies of “Disrupt” from Asia Books online. Of course, i only kept one copy for myself, the rest I distributed to my marketing team.
Mr William’s job is quite interesting, he works for FROG design and teaches at NYU. He specialized in finding solutions through innovative design. By the meaning of design, I wasn’t talking about the traditional meaning of design we are familiar too. This concept of design is actually covers all perspective from the physical product to mental structure.
This book is not a self help book or a book about brainstorming. It’s more like a book about   engineering concept. Only that it’s talking about engineering your mindset. It’s like a manual per say.
I’m not going to go through the detail of this book becuase it’s a very short book and everyone can finish it in a day. Moreover, in order to accomplish the goal of this book, it’s essential to go though every single pages very carefully and thoroughly.
I have read it three time myself before I start applying the concept of the book into one of the project I’m working on. Now my office wall is covered with posts-it.
This book is the example of sometime something so simple can slipped our mind. Quite literally, this book will help you get a grip on your own mind. Amazing
9/10 for this one
Cheers

My personal tribute to Steve Jobs

My personal tribute to Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was born in to this world as any child would, but he leave this world like on one else.
It’s not just about how great Apple is. It’s not just about how much I enjoy using my MacBook Air that comes with the brilliant OS Lion. It’s not just about how amaze I am when I handed my dad an Ipad and he can instantly understand the logic behind it.
Apple inventions are much more than just functional, it’s magical
Steve Jobs didn’t just invent products. He invented the ways to make us a better person, one step closer to the person who we wanted to be. Somehow, I think that’s one of the greatest thing a person can give to mankind.
He literally created thinkers, visionaries and game changers all around the globe. In other words, his inventions truly changes the world. He truly pushes the human race forward.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with Apple’s famous Ad “Think Different”. Given the circumstance,  I believe it will be very suitable to put Steve right after Pablo Picasso becuase Steve was and will be remembered as one greatest man ever walked the planet.
I have been watching his famous speech, which he gave during commencement day at Stanford in ’05, for more than 20 times. I was very inspired by it. Frankly, it was the moment I decided that I want to something that will have an impact to this world. I want to grow my company in a way that it will not only focus on making money but also focus on making the world a better place to live in.
I admit I still have my PC and still use it a lot especially when sending files that need to compatible with other computers but when I want to do something really meaningful, I pick up my Mac.......
RIP Steve Jobs, I will always stay hungry and stay foolish

What's brewing at TCDC?

What’s brewing at TCDC?
I think I will try to write this note in English. Although my writing skill is certainly not something I’m proud of but somehow I feel it might be more comprehensible for this  context to explain it in English.
Something big is going on at TCDC for the last two weeks.
Do you remember Apple’s very famous Ad called “ Think Different” which features world’s greatest revolutionary of our time? I think what TCDC is trying to accomplish is to give us the resources to increase the possibly of being one of those people someday.
During the past two weeks, TCDC has hosted an event called “ creativities unfold 2011” (noted that this event has been hosted for 5 years but I just have opportunity to join this year)  which contains of 30+ open house workshops of some of the most influential studios and companies in the field of creativity business in Thailand. I attend couple of it and it was great. I have chance to understand the intuitive of people in other industries and  making some new friends along the way as well.
The last 2 days were an international symposium which hosted some of the greatest speakers who see the importance of design and creativity from various countries. I feel that the caliber of most of the speakers that TCDC invited are exceptional. The opportunity to listen to their speeches is very sparse.
Frankly, I wasn’t expect much at first but when I entered the hall at TCDC on the first day of the symposium. What I see was a surprised. Given the fact that TCDC is a government based organization, it was quite astonishing to see that the execution of the atmosphere arrangement in this event was flawless. Clearly, it was done by a true professional who understand what’s at stake. From the stage to the sound system to the presentation arrangement, it almost feels like I was in the Apple’s launching event of the new Iphone.
The hall is crowded with visionaries, thinkers, creatives and game changers. I suddenly feel the vibe in the air, something I haven’t feel for years. It was the energy of people who refuse the status quo, refuse to accept things as given and more importantly embrace the fact that everything is possible and can be done.
I feel privileged to be able to listen to speakers like Mr Dennis Hong who is a founder of robotics and mechanism laboratory at Virginia Tech, where his dream of building the car that blind people can drive by themselves came true. His other inventions are also extraordinary , such as the Darwin robot which i believe it’s the face of the future Artifactual Intelligence which will become an integral part of Human species not long from now.
I have learned the passion of Mr Cameron Sinclair who is the co founder of Architecture for Humanity. The organization that starts from small dream to help people in need for proper houses, shelters, schools, community centers etc which has now effect more than 2 million people around the globe. What he did is literally changes the world.  I feel inspired by his story and his creativity that make me want to do something to make this world a better place to live in as well.
These are just two example of the extraordinary people who use his idea and creativity to change the world. The other speakers are very inspirational as well. Where else in the world would I have the opportunity to listen to visions of the founder of Wallpaper and Monocle magazine right after his plane is landed in Bangkok?
I think what TCDC has done a great job of assemble this event along with inviting these great speakers. But more importantly, I believe that this event inspires us all in one way or another. It’s actually creating a new visionary, thinkers, creatives and game changes just like the baton that passes along from the previous generations.
If you miss it this year, make sure you do not repeat the same mistake next year.
Cheers!

Book Review # 8: BrandSimple

BrandSimple
“Different the way people care about”
  • Differentiation - what makes your brand unique
  • Relevance- how appropriate this difference is to the audience you want to reach
  • Esteem - how well regarded your brand is in the marketplace
  • Knowledge - how well consumer knows and understand your brand
