Monocle : Best Magazine In the World (so far)

Like most people,  I don’t have a chance to travel the world as much as I wanted too. 

Juggling to balance work, family and personal life, sometime we lost touch to the world without even knowing it. 

That, my friend, can sometimes be dangerous in this creative economy world. That is, of course, if you considered  falling behind lethal. 

To keep up with the world in this hectic life of Bangkokian, I read Monocle. 

Monocle to me is not just a magazine, it’s more like a journal of creative minds. It walked me to the current affairs of the planet in a way other magazines can’t. Well, to be more precise, Monocle gives you  news, trends and updates in a stylish way. 

This success comes from a vision of Tyler Brûlé, founder and editor in chief of Monocle magazine. He also a founder of Wallpaper Magazine which is one of my favorite magazine as well. (however, even I subscribed to both magazines, I do like Monocle much better than Wallpaper)

Even with a lot of nice picture in this magazine, I still think that the amount of text in it can easily equal to a thick novel. 

Every time I read this magazine I realized two things. First, I  amaze to see many extraordinary creativities/initiatives from around the globe from it’s a Japanese way of designing a modern temple to how Copenhagen kick up culinary standard another notch. Second, unlike other magazines, Monocle only have one edition : the global edition thus it reminds me of how much Thailand still left behind and what a tragic on the way we cultivated on our recourses and culture. I can feel that other Thai people who read this magazine probably have a similar feeling to me. Frankly, it reminds me that in the global scale we nearly existed. It’s time for Thai people to start changing their country not just for the sake of themselves but for the sake of generations to come. 

The content of the magazine also encourage me to imagine more. In some way I have the same feelings as when I read cartoon during my childhood. It’s not only entertaining but also igniting the creative process. 

If you only have time to read one magazine a month, read this. You won’t regret it. (on another issue, Monocle only published 10 magazines a year) 

This is not a book thus I’m not gonna rate it but on a category of magazine, it’s definitely a ten.

Book Review # 10 & 11 เหตุผลของการมีชีวิตอยู่ Live & Learn

เหตุผลของการมีชีวิตอยุ่ Live & Learn

สวัสดีปีใหม่ครับทุกท่าน ในช่วงเวลาการเปลี่ยนผ่านจากปี  2011 เป็น 2012 นั้นผมได้ใช้เวลาหมดไปกับการอ่านหนังสือสองเล่ม ที่เมื่อเอาชื่อมาต่อกันแล้วกลับดูเข้ากันอย่างประหลาด 

เล่มแรกคือ “เหตุผลของการมีชีวิตอยู่” ของ วันชัย ตันติวิทยาพิทักษ์ 

อีกเล่มคือ “Live & Learn” หนึ่งในหนังสือซีรีย์ยอดนิยมของ วรากรณ์ สามโกเศศ

จะขอรีวิวไปพร้อมกันเลยละกันนะครับ 

หนังสือสองเล่มนี้่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับความเป็นไปของโลก ทั้งเรื่องที่เป็นข่าวอยู่ ณ ปัจจุบัน กับเรื่องบ้างเรื่องที่เป็นข่าวในวงแคบๆ ซึ่งคนทั่วไปอย่างเราๆ คงไม่เคยได้ยิน มีการสอดแทรกการค้นพบอันน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจ รวมถึงเล่าเรื่องย้อนหลังถึงที่มาที่ไปของเหตุการณ์สำคัญใจประวัติศาสตร์  แม้บ้างเรื่องอาจจะไม่ได้ดูเป็นเรื่องใหญ่หรือใกล้ตัวเรามากนัก แต่หนังสือสองเล่มนี้ก็เอามา “ย่อย” ให้สั้นๆ เพื่อให้พวกเรารับรู้ในสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นกับโลกเราทั้งในอดีกตและปัจจุบัน สิ่งนึงที่ผมชอบมากคือหนังสือเล่มนี้พยายามจะสอนให้มนุษย์ต้องเรียนรู้จากสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วเพื่อนำมาพัฒนาโลกนี้ให้ดีขึ้น น่าเสียดายที่ส่วนใหญ่เราจะไม่ค่อยได้ทำเช่นนั้น

หนังสือของวันชัยนั้นอาจจะใส่คำวิพากวิจารณ์ ส่วนตัวมากกว่าหนังสือของวรากรณ์ซักหน่อย โดยเฉพาะความเรื่องที่เกี่ยวข้องกับนักการเมือง ซึ่งถ้าอ่านอย่างเป็นกลางก็ต้องบอกวว่าส่วนมากก็จะค่อนข้างจริง เพราะฉะนั้นถ้าเราเปิดใจสักนิดไม่เชียร์ข้างใดข้างหนึ่งมากจนเกินไป เราก็จะเห็นว่าบางทีประชาชนคนไทยนี่เแหละที่ตกเป็นเหยื่อของเกมส์แย่งชิงอำนาจของผู้นำสองกลุ่ม โดยยัดเยียดความิดแบ่งสีใส่ประชาชนและจับพวกเขาเหล่านั้นเป็นตัวประกันทางความคิด โดยลากเอาสถาบันหลักๆของประเทศมาเกี่ยวข้องจนเลอะเทะไปหมด 

ผมเชื่อว่าทุกวันนี้แม้แต่คนเริ่ม “สงครามทางความคิด” ก็ยังหาทาง”ลง”หรือ”จบ” ให้ตัวเองไม่เจอเหมือนกัน

ในหนังสือเรื่อง “เหตุผลของการณ์มีชีวิตอยู่” มีการกล่าวถึงเรื่อง บทเรียนสงครามกลางเมืองจากศรีลังกา เมื่อประชาชน ต้องเลือกข้าง บอกตรงๆ ว่าอ่านแล้วขนลุกเลย เพราะจุดเริ่มต้นมันช่างมีความคล้ายคลังกับเหตุการณ์ปัจจุบันของไทยมาก หรือ เรื่องบาดแผลสงครามกลางเมืองในสหรัฐอเมริกา ก็มีจุดเริ่มต้นไม่ต่างกับสิ่งที่เราเผชิญอยู่ที่ประเทศไทย ณ​ปัจจุบัน 

หนังสือสองเล่มนี้ไม่ได้มีแต่เนื้อหาการเมืองนะครับ เรื่องเบาๆอย่างกำเนิดของดินสอ หรือ เรื่องปลาแซลมอน ก็มีเคล็ดความ้มาช่วยเพิ่มรอยหยักในสมองให้เราเช่นกัน

แต่

สิ่งที่หนังสือสองเล่มนี้พยายามจะบอกกับเราก็คือ

“ประวัติศาสตร์สอนให้เรารู้ว่า เราไม่เคยเรียนรู้อะไรจากประวัติศาสตร์เลย”

Book Review # 9: Disrupt - A manual to your mind

Well well well, it’s good to be back.I haven’t been doing the book review for over a month. 

As we all know, Thailand faced one of the worst flood in our nation’s history. While the real cause of the flood is debatable, it’s about time we get our lives back together and move on. 

During the peak period I absorbed the flooding news like sponge. Therefore, i was too stress to read, too stress to do something creative. Basically, I was kind of dried out. I managed to read only one book during that period (No, it’s not the book i’m going to review today). It’s a Japanese thriller which was actually quite good. 

Anyway, back to our book. I bought this book after I attended the TCDC annual symposium which one of the key speakers that day was Luke Williams. The overall event itself was astonishing but Mr William speech has given me some insights that I would like to study more. Thus, I ordered 5 copies of “Disrupt” from Asia Books online. Of course, i only kept one copy for myself, the rest I distributed to my marketing team. 

Mr William’s job is quite interesting, he works for FROG design and teaches at NYU. He specialized in finding solutions through innovative design. By the meaning of design, I wasn’t talking about the traditional meaning of design we are familiar too. This concept of design is actually covers all perspective from the physical product to mental structure. 

This book is not a self help book or a book about brainstorming. It’s more like a book about   engineering concept. Only that it’s talking about engineering your mindset. It’s like a manual per say. 

I’m not going to go through the detail of this book becuase it’s a very short book and everyone can finish it in a day. Moreover, in order to accomplish the goal of this book, it’s essential to go though every single pages very carefully and thoroughly. 

I have read it three time myself before I start applying the concept of the book into one of the project I’m working on. Now my office wall is covered with posts-it. 

This book is the example of sometime something so simple can slipped our mind. Quite literally, this book will help you get a grip on your own mind. Amazing
